Ollioules - Funerary slab, district of Martelle
The stony inscriptions
This white marble slab was discovered, reused in a retaining wall.
It is a funerary slab whose Hebrew inscription tells us that it is intended for Rabbi Jonah Duran, who died in 1625. This epitaph of seven stanzas of four verses, engraved in square Hebrew characters, presents the deceased descendant of an illustrious lineage.
It attests to the presence of a Jewish community at the beginning of the seventeenth century in an undetermined locality of the region, the tile having been imported.
Protection: Rabbi Jonah Duran’s funeral slab, classification by order of 1 December 1953
