The bookshop: an important place for the development of reading
The book is the first cultural asset of the French. And for good reason, reading remains a very popular leisure activity. Overall, the French prefer to read books that belong to them and prefer to buy new books (82% of book purchases in 2019). Despite the increase in purchases via the internet, 50% of young adults still turn to their bookshop. When we ask readers, the obstacles to buying in bookstores are mostly geographical remoteness and the feeling of lack of availability on the shelves.
The increase in the number of readers of comics (2020 is the year of the 9th art), manga and comics has nevertheless led to an increase in the number of specialist bookshops, especially among young adults. The latter are also more sensitive to the advice that can be given to them by relatives, teachers, but also by their booksellers.
On the basis of this information, the bookshop remains an essential business for the development of reading. The work of selection and advice inherent to these places can be enhanced via the labels «Independent Reference Bookshop» and «Reference Bookshop».
The Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region has some 170 bookstores (ARL, 2018) of which new books are the main activity. They are distributed over the territory as follows:
The total turnover is EUR 93 million and 580 full-time jobs. The proportion of specialist and general bookstores remains stable: 64% are generalists and 36% are specialized since 2011. The ARL study highlights the fact that in 2019, 10% of bookstores in the territory accounted for 65% of total turnover, which is indicative of the weight of large booksellers even as their number decreases (-3 points compared to 2016) and that their turnover increased (+13 points compared to 2016). At the same time, small bookstores are experiencing difficulties and are finding it difficult to obtain remuneration for the payroll, which is also being reduced.
