UDAP: Departmental Units of Architecture and Heritage of the Pays de la Loire
The departmental units of architecture and heritage (UDAP) are decentralized services of the Ministry of Culture. At the departmental level, they constitute the territorial units of the DRAC, and were previously called territorial services of architecture and heritage (STAP). Within the DRAC, the UDAP works to promote a qualitative and sustainable development of the territory, where landscape, urbanism and architecture maintain a reasoned dialogue between project dynamics and taking into account the heritage.
Missions
The UDAP, under the authority of a head of department, architect of the buildings of France (ABF) carry out 4 main missions:
- Promote the architectural and landscape quality of buildings, particularly by ensuring the integration of sustainable development issues;
- Contribute to the quality of urban and rural development projects and to city policy, encourage architectural creation;
- Advise clients in the development and implementation of their architectural projects. Participate in the development of planning documents
- Participate in the implementation of regulations on monumental heritage: preserve and preserve historic monuments;
- Evaluate maintenance, restoration, rehabilitation, valorization projects and participate in the allocation of public aid;
- Contribute to the scientific and technical control of the works as well as to the health watch on the historical monuments
- The architect of the buildings of France is curator of the monuments of the State and all those assigned to the Ministry of Culture (cathedrals....).
- Control maintenance work on classified monuments belonging to the State
- Control and ensure the preservation of protected areas, contribute to their development by participating in the appraisal of development projects or works located near a historic monument, protected site, protected area, Architectural, Urban and Landscape Heritage Protection Area (ZPPAUP) or Architectural and Heritage Enhancement Areas (AVAP);
- Propose, animate and coordinate studies relating to protected areas, ZPPAUP or AVAP and the surroundings of historic monuments (modified protection areas).
- Contribute, in collaboration with the other decentralized services of the State, to the application of the regulations concerning the environment (sites registered and classified, outdoor advertising and signs);
- Inscribe urban planning and urban renewal in a sustainable quality objective of natural and urban spaces.

Work in protected areas
Protected areas are urban or landscape complexes remarkable for their heritage interest in the cultural sense of the term, particularly in terms of history, architecture, urbanism, landscape, archaeology. They cover about 6% of our territory and include built and landscape elements of different nature and times.
