Saint-Dié (Vosges) - Saint-Dié Cathedral
The Saint-Dié-des-Vosges Cathedral in pink sandstone forms, with the church "Notre-Dame-de-Galée" and the cloister that connects the two buildings, a real ensemble.
The Cathedral of Saint-Dié is built on the site of two religious buildings built between 664 and 679: a church in honour of Saint Mary, the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul and a basilica dedicated to Saints Maurice, Exupère and Candide.
The whole that we know now would have been built following a fire in 1155 (for the north aisle and the north wall of the Nave).
The cathedral was then rebuilt until 1554, when a new fire destroyed part of the roofs of both churches and the cloister.
The present classical façade of Giovanni Betto dates from 1711-1714. It is built to replace the original tower dating from 1636.
