In addition to departmental services archives run by state curators, the region includes 60 municipal archives services professionally organized. The geographical distribution is however very uneven: 18 in the Rhône, 10 in the Drôme and only 1 in the Ain.
To compensate for these inequalities, we must point out an original form of pooling the treatment of archives: the posts of itinerant archivist, or intercommunal archivist. These archivists are recruited either by the Departmental Centre for the Management of the Territorial Public Service, by the Departmental Archives Service, or by a grouping of municipalities, and made available to the municipalities. This is the case in Ardèche, Drôme and Haute-Savoie.
In the field of archives, the DRAC implements the broad guidelines adopted by the Direction des Archives de France: assistance for the construction of departmental and municipal archives buildings; assistance for inventory, restoration, digitization and enhancement of archival holdings.
In terms of buildings, the most remarkable recent achievements in this field are: the departmental archives of Haute-Savoie, the municipal archives of Lyon, the departmental archives of Isère.
The State contributes indifferently to projects from local authorities or associations, subject to the presence of qualified personnel guaranteeing the scientific quality of the project.
Among the projects supported in terms of restoration, digitization and valorization, we can mention: the inventory and digitization of the family archives of Sassenage, in Isère; the inventory of audiovisual and sound collections of the association Mémoire de la Drôme; the restoration of charters in Montélimar, the Napoleonic cadastre in Grenoble, ancient books in Brié-et-Angonne, Noëls de Bessans; a travelling exhibition in the communes of the Rhône, on the markets of yesteryear; an exhibition on communal administration in Saint-Etienne.
