Prefecture of La Réunion

The prefect is assisted in the performance of his duties by a team in the prefecture but also by sub-prefects of boroughs. Under the authority of the sub-prefect of the district, the sub-prefecture constitutes the network of proximity of the prefecture, of which it is an integral part.

The sub-prefect is in charge of the general administration and the application on the ground of the policies of the State; he contributes to the maintenance of security and public order and ensures the protection of the populations. It is the guarantor of the respect of the laws and regulations of which it organizes and supervises the control while providing the necessary councils to the local authorities.

It fulfils the tasks entrusted to it by the laws and regulations and in particular the decree of 29 April 2004 on the powers of prefects, the organization and the action of the State services in the regions and departments. He ensures, under the authority of the prefect, the coordination of the action of the decentralized services of the State in the district and the implementation of interdepartmental policies.
