French Southern and Antarctic Territories

An original overseas community
Les French Southern and Antarctic Territories (TAAF) have been a sui generis located overseas and equipped with theadministrative and financial autonomy.
This community was created by the law of August 6, 1955 repealing a decree of 1924 that previously linked these lands to the Government General of France in Madagascar. The Decree no. 2008-919 of 11 September 2008, taken for the application of the TAAF statute, is the main development text.
The French Southern and Antarctic Territories are formed by the Crozet archipelago, the Kerguelen Islands, the Saint Paul Islands and Amsterdam, the Adelie land and the Scattered Islands (since the law of 21 February 2007). The latter bring together the tropical islands of the Glorious Archipelago, Juan de Nova, Europa and Bassas da India in the Mozambique Channel, and Tromelin north of Reunion.
All these lands provide France with a Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) more than 2,200,000 km² rich in marine resources, which helps to give France the second maritime hold in the world after that of the United States.
The community has a budget from its own resources (fishing rights, philately, taxes, tourism, mooring fees, foundations, etc.) supplemented by a grant from the Ministries of the Interior, the Overseas Territories and the Ecological and Solidarity Transition. Like other overseas territories, it is associated with the European Union as OCT (overseas countries and territories) The European Development Fund (EDF).
Since 2000, the See has been in Saint-Pierre de La Réunion where it gathers nearly 65 people. It hosts the office and the office of the prefect, the general secretariat and the various departments: the directorate of technical services, the directorate of administrative and financial affairs, the directorate of the environment, the directorate of fisheries and maritime questions, legal and international affairs, medical and communication services. The Paris branch of TAAF houses the postal and philatelic services and part of the administrative and medical services.
