Programmed archaeology
Planned archaeology operations are carried out according to research projects carried out by researchers. These operations respond to specific scientific issues that are part of broader national and regional research axes (https://www.culture.gouv.fr/Sites-thematiques/Archeologie/Etude-recherche/La-programmation-nationale-de-la-recherche-archeologique.)
The scheduled operations (excavations, surveys, prospecting, rock art surveys, collective research projects) are subject to a system of authorizations issued by the Prefect of the region through the Direction of Cultural Affairs Guadeloupe (DAC) and the Regional Archaeological Service (SRA). Prior to any scheduled operation, the scientific officer must also obtain the agreement of the landowner.
Applications should be sent to the Regional Archaeology Service, which, after examining them, sends them for advice to the Territorial Commission for Overseas Archaeological Research (https://www.culture.gouv.fr/Sites-thematiques/Archeologie/Qu-est-ce-que-l-archeologie/Les-commissions-territoriales-de-la-recherche-archeologiqueLiens vers les contacts au SRA.), placed under the authority of the Prefect of Martinique. A planned archaeology operation can be undertaken by a researcher, a professional archaeologist or a student. The authorisation is issued by the SRA after assessing the quality of the scientific project and the competence of the project leader. The SRA provides scientific and technical control of the operation throughout its development.
Planned archaeology operations may be funded by the Cultural Affairs Directorate. These grants can be combined with those of other public or private organizations. Applications for grants must be submitted with the application file for authorization of an archaeological operation.
Requests for scheduled transactions must be submitted by the end of December of each year. However, it is preferable to send a pre-application accompanied by a financial estimate at the end of June each year in order to take into account all the requests in the budget programming.
