Houses of the Illustrious
The Maisons des Illustres are a collection of major places of memory for understanding the cultural history of France. They testify to the diversity of our country’s heritage, legible in its monumental traces as in the collective imagination. Created in 2011 by the Ministry of Culture and Communication, the label Maison des Illustres brings to the attention of the public these places whose vocation is to preserve and transmit the memory of the women and men who lived in them and distinguished themselves in the arts, literature, science, music, theatre, film and the adventure of ideas.
Awarded for a period of 5 years to Houses that open to visitors more than forty days per year, the label Maison des Illustres guarantees a quality cultural program, forms of accompaniment to the visit adapted to all, an authenticity and originality of the museum content, the regular organization of cultural events.
The labeled houses offer a wide architectural panorama and a multiplicity of approaches to the cultural heritage, which testify to the action towards the public conducted in each region by all the departments of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, local authorities, private owners and associations.
