For its 42nd edition, from May 13 to 20, 2023, the Jazz sous les Pommiers festival is celebrating jazz with a high standard, openness and character. A musical genre in its own right, Coutances paid tribute to him and became one of his capitals, thanks to the work of Denis Lebas and all the volunteers of the Jazz sous les Pommiers festival.

Exceptional 2023 programming

The 2023 program offers us once again to hear first-rate artists who will delight confirmed amateurs as neophytes: among others: Eliades Ochoa, one of the last representatives of the Buena Vista Social Club, with his eight-string guitar; Steve Coleman, genius of Harlem and master of improvisation or the pianist Yessaï Karapetian, freshly winner of the talent competition Adami Jazz, and his music interwoven with electro and traditional Armenian music.

Focus on...

Femi Kuti & the positive force:
Femi Kuti.JPG

We no longer present Femi Kuti, son of Fela, the inventor of afrobeat. Among the Kuti, musical heritage and talent are passed down from father to son. True to his convictions, Femi took up the torch to sing his political battles. Between extensive musical influences and traditional African roots, Femi is a musician who knows how to offer his audience torrid, generous and dancing concerts. A crazy energy on stage at the service of commitment. Fun at every note and for everyone!

Eliades Ochoa:

Partner of Compay Segundo, Eliades Ochoa is one of the last representatives of the mythical Buena Vista Social Club. With an eight-string guitar that he made himself and his perennial cowboy hat, he spent no less than six decades on stage and collaborated with big names in the music like Ry Cooder, Toumani Diabaté, Manu Dibango. Accompanied by seasoned musicians, this fervent defender of traditional Cuban music resonates the tunes of his island, with generosity and skill. (@Jazzsouslespommiers)

SteveColeman & Five Elements:

Saxophonist Steve Coleman has become an inspiration to an entire generation of jazz. He is one of the first to have seen the possibilities offered by hip hop to renew this music. His success came from the streets, where he performed frequently. His band, Five Elements, has developed musical concepts in small clubs in Harlem and Brooklyn. The amalgamation of vocal and instrumental improvisations superimposed on a rhythmic base of African influence, opened new paths in creative music and placed it at the forefront of innovations in black music. For the first time in Coutances, a shock concert not to be missed!

A place of artistic creation

Jazz sous les Pommiers is also a place of creation that regularly welcomes in residence exceptional artistic teams. These residencies are valuable tools that enrich the artistic and cultural missions of the municipal theatre of Coutances, serving public policy. Two artists are currently on the stage: trombonist Fidel Fourneyron and violinist Theo Ceccaldi.

In addition, as every year, the festival engages in strong cultural actions for all and close to the citizens, through workshops, animations, performances directed to all audiences - distant, prevented, young and old.

The bringing together of the Festival Jazz sous les Pommiers and the Théâtre de Coutances in a new joint project will certainly make it possible to see the emergence of a new pole of reference in the matter on the national territory, which the State will willingly accompany.

Thus, Jazz sous les pommiers and the Théâtre municipal de Coutances offer us, once again, a remarkable artistic and cultural project and promise us nine days of musical festivities

The Normandy DRAC supports and loves Jazz sous les Pommiers!
