Museums of France and Maisons des Illustres
The considerable number of heritage establishments, the wealth of collections, the cultural and educational offer make the Île-de-France one of the most attractive regions in Europe. It has 133 museums in France, including national institutions, and 93 museums in France under the authority of local authorities, associations and foundations that are subject to scientific monitoring by the DRAC.

Our missions
Missions of advice and technical assistance to museums in France, in application of the Heritage Code (Book IV), are carried out by the advisors/advisers for museums in close connection with the French Museum Service of the General Directorate of Heritage and Architecture.
The DRAC monitors and assists applications for the Musée de France designation, projects for the creation, renovation and expansion of museums and ensures the compliance of institutions with the obligations of the law of 4 January 2002.
45 sites are labeled Maisons des Illustres since 2011, located in Paris and in the departments of small and large crown. Also, the service ensures the monitoring and, since 2020, year of the deconcentration of the procedure, the labeling of the 45 Maisons des Illustres of the region. The network offers to the Île-de-France, since the creation of the label, an undeniable wealth in terms of sensitive, heritage and cultural approach alongside historical monuments, museums and exhibition places.
- The DRAC organises regional scientific commissions for the acquisition of works and/or objects (purchase, donation, bequests) of French museums and the restoration of collections;
- It awards grants to respond to requests from museums in France that present projects in an annual program;
- It manages decentralized funds for the acquisition of works of art to enrich collections (Fonds régional d'acquisition pour les musées);
- It provides support for the training of museum professionals;
- It assists museums in drafting technical documents (Scientific and cultural projects, Plans for the safeguarding of cultural property, etc.);
- It monitors and labels the Maisons des Illustres;
- It supports the owners of the Maisons des Illustres in structuring and developing equipment;
- It coordinates networks of museums and Maisons des Illustres by organizing meetings of professionals;
- It monitors museums that do not benefit from the Musée de France designation and sites that can claim the Maisons des Illustres label.
