The exploitation of archaeological research
The aim of scientific exploitation is to make the results of regional archaeology known to a public of specialists. Upgrading for audiences has similar objectives, but is aimed at all audiences. In this area, the Regional Archaeology Service (SRA) intervenes at different levels: it can be the initiator of projects, but also be a partner or to investigate applications for funding by the State.
Scientific exploitation
SRA participates in the dissemination of archaeological results by publishing a Regional Science Review (BSR), which is widely disseminated at regional level, where all operations carried out during the year are presented.
In addition, the Regional Archaeology Service supports, including through grants, scientific events for which it is sometimes the initiator or an active stakeholder:
- Round tables, thematic days, symposia and other meetings to present the results of regional research;
- The two regional archaeological journals, Revue du Nord - Archéologie de la Picardie et du Nord de la France and Revue archéologique de Picardie are subsidized by the State; in addition, SRA agents, who publish articles there, are members of their reading committees;
- Other publications can be helped by the DRAC if they are related to the archaeology of Hauts-de-France.
Promotion to the public
The actions towards the public are multiple:
- Each year, in November, the two Regional Archaeology Days (JRA) are organized by the SRA in collaboration with learned societies and archaeology operators. They allow the public and archaeologists of the region to discover the results of the excavations and research carried out during the past year; Free, they are a great success with, on average, more than 200 participants each day;
- the Regional Service of Archaeology publishes each year, four booklets of the collection «Archéologie des Hauts-de-France», in collaboration with the archaeology operators. Richly illustrated and didactic, they present the results of excavations or particularly interesting research. Discover the brochure collections ;
- The Nordoc'Archeo web portal, co-managed by the DRAC and the UMR IRHIS (Univ. de Lille), aims to facilitate bibliographic research and enhance northern archaeology. It presents regional archaeological news (discoveries and agenda) and publishes unpublished articles on archaeological sites, archaeologists, furniture, etc. It receives 9,000 visitors per month on average.
- For the past two years, the Regional Archaeology Service has been publishing kakemonos that present the activity of regional archaeological research.
Regional archaeology benefits from numerous actions aimed at the public, to which the Regional Archaeology Service is often associated, even actively participates and provides financial support:
- the Amiens Archaeology Film Festival organized by the Centre Interdispiplinaire de Recherches Archéologiques de la Somme (CIRAS), is the most famous regional event in this field, with an international reputation and a local success that does not last for years. The festival has been held every two years since 1990 and presents a selection of films devoted to archaeology. Decentralized sessions are held throughout the region;
- the CIRAS website, publishes archaeological information and a press review on international archaeology. There is also a virtual archaeological library.
- the national events such as the European Archaeology Days or the European Heritage Days, but also the European Museum Night or Science Week;
- conferences, open days on current excavation sites;
- cultural activities with the National Education, for example visits to schools on construction sites or in the CEC;
- des arts and cultural education operations (EAC) funded by the DRAC;
- Exhibitions and exhibitions folders.
