Share the results of the research that marks the regional Paleolithic, put them in perspective with the recent results of the surrounding regions: here are some of the ambitions of this study day proposed and organized by Marina Pagli and Émilie Goval, SRA-DRAC Hauts-de-France.

Thursday, March 16, 2023 took place the study day entitled «Terres de Préhistoire: sharing knowledge on the Paleolithic occupations of Northern France», organized by the regional service of archaeology (SRA) the DRAC Hauts-de-France and the University of Lille.

Offering scientific exchanges combining geology and archaeology, this study day was an opportunity to tribute to archaeologist Luc Vallin whose work contributed to the development of the regional Palaeolithic by evoking the main themes on which he worked during his career.

The University of Lille proposes to (re) discover the different interventions and conferences, which punctuated this March 16, 2023, thanks to 8 recordings.

Hauts-de-France, land of prehistory

Marked by a long tradition of research in prehistory, the Hauts-de-France do not cease to deliver unpublished and renewed data for the study of Palaeolithic settlements in the North of France, and to renew the problems. From the beginning of prehistory in the region, its study is closely associated with the Geology of the Quaternary.
The study of lithic industries in Hauts-de-France, associated with high-resolution sequences, allows a very fine approach to the material culture of Palaeolithic men and women.

Preventive archaeology and programmed archaeology

In a region strongly concerned by planning, preventive archaeology feeds discoveries and study of Palaeolithic cultures and Quaternary sequences. In parallel and complementary, programmed archaeology enriches over the years the knowledge of major sites, issues and regional syntheses.

Collective research projects

Thus, in recent years, new working dynamics have emerged through the establishment of collective research projects (PCR), which bring together and federate the living forces in prehistory in each region, giving a unitary framework to multiple researches on the Paleolithic occupations.
