As part of the construction of flood expansion basins in the Aa valley (SmageAa development), INRAP and the Directorate of Archaeology of Pas-de-Calais excavated from July to October 2016 a field of the bishops of Thérouanne.
The discovery of large surfaces of decorated medieval pavements led the DRAC Haut-de-France to prescribe a removal operation of this exceptional set.
By its unprecedented scale and the richness of its decor, this ensemble is a major piece of decorative art in medieval architecture. It represents one of the rare discoveries of this type in a civil context. The conservation of this unique heritage complex is an issue for scientific research and the dissemination of knowledge to the public.
The number 11 of the collection Archaeology of the Hauts-de-France titled Saint-Martin d'Hardinghem, the Lévèque court, a country residence of the bishops of Thérouanne reports on this exceptional archaeological discovery and the scientific knowledge provided by the excavation of the Bishop’s Court of Saint-Martin-d'Hardinghem.
