Work in protected areas
Your project is located in a protected area
The different types of protected spaces:
- the notable heritage sites (former salvage areas and architectural and heritage development areas);
- the 500 meter perimeter in co-visibility field with a historic monument ;
- the perimeter of the surroundings ;
- the classified and registered sites under the Environmental Code.
All the works likely to modify the exterior appearance of a building, built or not built (courtyard, garden...) are concerned, and, in the Remarkable Heritage Sites, as soon as the study of a plan of preservation and development, those likely to alter the condition of the internal parts.
the file is to be removed and deposited in the town hall of the municipality concerned by the project.
The timing of instructions depends on the type of approach.
The dossier will be submitted, by the municipality, to the agreement of the architect of the buildings of France (ABF), which ensures "respect for the heritage, architecture, natural or urban landscape, the quality of the constructions and their harmonious insertion in the surrounding environment, as well as compliance with the rules of the management plan applicable to the Heritage Site".
The AFB’s agreement may be accompanied by requirements so that the project does not harm the building or its environment.
Consult the architect of the buildings of France on a preliminary project
One of the AFB’s missions is to advise individuals and communities on architecture, urban planning, landscape and living conditions.
On some projects, it is recommended, prior to the submission of the file, to approach the UDAP in order to have the feasibility of the project examined by the ABF and ensure its success.
Special cases
If your project does not fit in any of these cases (signs, clearing, forest roads...), it is advisable to contact the UDAP to know the type of authorization request.

Geolocated access to the heritage information of the Bas-Rhin territory
To find out whether your land or your house is subject to public utilities, and in particular in the opinion of the Architect of Buildings of France, the Ministry of Culture makes available to the public a cartographic platform, theHeritage atlas which allows everyone (private individuals, elected officials, public and private developers...) to locate and access, free of charge, through an interactive map, the geographical information of heritage: historical monuments, protected spaces, zones of presumption of archaeological prescription, World Heritage properties, labels, as well as cartographic documents related to archaeology, architecture...
The Heritage Atlas acts in full interoperability with the site Geoportal.frIt thus constitutes a privileged entrance to the heritage domain at the same time as it offers an enriched reading of the territory.
Attention, this site is under development: are only enforceable, public utility easements, annexed to the planning document of each municipality.
Advice sheets "Work in protected areas" or "Work on built heritage"
The UDAP publishes advice sheets that accompany individuals, elected officials or public and private developers in their projects of renovation of an old building, or of a building located in a remarkable heritage site or in the vicinity of a historic monument. The objective is to ask, before the submission of the preliminary declaration or application for authorisation, the questions that will allow the success of the project.
Three themes are available for the Bas-Rhin: Heritage - Environment - Town planning
