In the Marne, at the gates of Reims, has just opened, on Saturday, January 18, 2020, in the heart of the town of Gueux (1,700 inhabitants), a media library designed on the model of the Third place. A new cultural equipment made with the support of the State/ DRAC Grand Est.

Installed in two buildings of the end of the XIXe The media library now covers a surface area of 260 m2.
Started in December 2018, the renovation work was completed at the end of 2019, under the management of the agency N. Poitout Architecture (Reims).

The services

The media library is divided into two adult and youth sectors, which open, in fine weather, on a reading garden (100 m2).

In addition to the classic loan (5,000 documents already available), it offers services dedicated to a variety of audiences, including e-administration assistance, coding workshops, creative leisure (sewing, crochet, etc.), video games tournament, adult and youth book club, and “secret” club. dedicated to teens, home delivery, etc.

Partnerships

Many partnerships will be forged with local associations as well as neighbouring cultural institutions and media libraries.

Professionalization

The management of the equipment was entrusted to a professional librarian, a recruitment, supported financially by the DRAC Grand Est, as part of the plan ofextension of library opening hours of the Ministry of Culture.

The DRAC also supported the acquisition of the fund, computerization and furniture equipment, via the General decentralisation allocation for libraries (DGD).

Finally, the media library relies on a network of volunteers who are involved in the project.

Third place model

A place of social connection, exchange and discovery, open to all, the media library intends to become the meeting place of the inhabitants, who will meet there to borrow documents, visit an exhibition or just exchange around a coffee.

Registration is free and readers also benefit from the digital offer (online press, self-study and video on demand) set up by the department of Marne, via the Departmental Library of Marne (BDM).

Training venue

The Gueux media library is also intended to be a place of training, for students in the book trade, or those of the association of French librarians (ABF). It will welcome interns and volunteers who wish to develop their knowledge through practice.

 

Funding for the Media Library

The cost of re-qualification of the media library, in the amount of €530,000, was worn by the commune of Gueux ; by theState / DRAC Grand Est, under the DGD (152 889 € for furniture equipment, computer equipment, document acquisition and operation) and Department of the Marne (€10,753 for computerization and furniture).
