Label "Outstanding contemporary architecture"
The "Outstanding Contemporary Architecture" label is awarded to buildings, architectural ensembles, structures and fittings, among those less than a hundred years old, of architectural and technical interest.
From the Heritage label of XXe century... on the label Remarkable contemporary architecture
Knowledge, conservation and presentation of the architectural and urban heritage of the XXe In 1999, the Ministry of Culture created the label "Patrimoine du XX". The Ministry ofe "in order to identify and bring to the attention of the public the buildings and urban complexes which, among the architectural achievements of this century, are as many material witnesses of the technical, economic, social, political and cultural evolution of our society.
The label "Heritage of XXe "was set up by three successive circulars from 1999 to 2001, in accordance with a recommendation of the Council of Europe (Recommendation R(91)13 of 9 September 1991) aimed at avoiding, in the words of the Commission, "depriving future generations of this moment of European memory.'
The law of 7 July 2016, relating to the freedom of creation, architecture and heritage, has transformed the label "Patrimoine du XXe century" in "Outstanding contemporary architecture". It may be granted to architectural achievements until the centenary of the building.
The label aims to draw the attention of decision-makers, designers, as well as its users and the public on the remarkable productions of this century in terms of architecture. In this way, it was to gradually make the latter perceived by the collective conscience as fully-fledged elements of our heritage and to lead, when the time came, to seek the most relevant tool to ensure the protection of a certain number of them.
With no legal impact on the buildings or urban complexes concerned, the award of the label is a vector for the development of the quality of urban spaces and the consideration of contemporary architecture.
Objectives of the label "Remarkable contemporary architecture"
The Ministry of Culture wanted to relaunch this policy, in order to take a new look at the recent heritage, and to encourage public awareness of this architecture and its urban environment, Law no. 2016-925 of 7 July 2016 on freedom of creation, architecture and heritage has thus transformed the label "Heritage of XXe century" label "Remarkable contemporary architecture".
According to Article L.650-1 of the Heritage Code, the "Outstanding Contemporary Architecture" label is awarded to buildings, architectural ensembles, structures and fittings, among those less than 100 years old, whose design is of sufficient architectural or technical interest.
The same article provides that the buildings formerly labeled "Heritage of XXe century" automatically benefit from the label "Outstanding contemporary architecture".
The award of the label "Remarkable contemporary architecture" has a primarily didactic objective and participates in the valorization of these material witnesses of the technical, economic, social, political and cultural evolution of society.
The criteria for labelling
Decree no. 2017-433 of 28 March 2017 on the "Outstanding contemporary architecture" label defines the criteria for labelling:
- the singularity of the work;
- the innovative or experimental nature of architectural, urban, landscape or technical design or its place in the history of techniques;
- the notoriety of the work, with particular regard to the publications of which it has been the subject or mentioning it;
- exemplarity of the work in participation in public policy;
- the manifest value of the work because of its membership in a recognized architectural movement or ideas;
- membership of a group or a work for which the author has national or local recognition.
Number of buildings labelled in the Great East
Currently 191 buildings are labeled "Remarkable contemporary architecture" in the Great East.
A list, to download in footer, presents, in excel or pdf format, the buildings classified by department and by municipality, and specifies the name of the/ architects, the date of realization.

Attribution and effects of labelling
The application for award
It can be presented by the owner, or anyone with an interest.
The initiative may also come from the Regional Prefect. When the owner is not the applicant, the Prefect takes his opinion.
The request is to be sent, to the Prefect of Region - DRAC Grand Est, using the form CERFA 15853* 01 below. A decree (22 February 2018) specifies the modalities.
The award of the label
The label is awarded by decision of the Regional Prefect, after the opinion of the Regional Heritage and Architecture Commission (RCAP).
The impact of the label
The label offers the following advantages:
- mention in the documents produced by the Ministry of Culture;
- the possibility of obtaining specific road signs (in the same way as buildings protected under historic monuments);
- authorisation to use the label and logo on all communication media;
- technical assistance in adapting labelled works to new uses.
Work on the building:
In case of work on the property, when the building is not protected under the title of the remarkable heritage sites or the surroundings..., the owner must send to the prefect of region, by registered letter, with request of acknowledgement of receipt, at least two months before an application for a permit or a preliminary declaration is submitted, a description of the nature and impact of the work envisaged.
Sale of the property:
In case of sale of the property, the information to the regional prefect must be made within two months...
