Arts and cultural education in schools in Mayotte
Artistic and cultural education is present in Mayotte throughout the school curriculum, from kindergarten to university, and is implemented in the city contracts and the regulatory perimeters of the City Policy and social cohesion. It aims to articulate the different times of children and young people: school, extracurricular and extracurricular.
In Mayotte, artistic and cultural education has as its main objective the reduction of social and territorial inequalities and the possibility for all the young people of the department to access a culture as rich and diversified as those of the rest of the territory national. It is particularly developed through cultural operators supported at the departmental level.
1. Strategic Priorities to Drive CBA Uptake
To achieve these objectives supported by the two ministries, the DAC and the Rectorate of Mayotte aim to develop a context favourable to the generalization of arts and cultural education according to three strategic priorities:
Axis 1: Develop artistic and cultural educational resources
The partners encourage and promote the development of artistic and cultural educational resources conducive to the implementation of artistic and cultural education pathways on priority themes defined jointly:
- books and reading in partnership with the Regional Agency for Books and Reading;
- artistic practice through artist residencies that encourage the registration of projects over time;
- heritage: design of resources adapted to mediation within the framework of the partnership with the Musée de Mayotte, circulation of exhibitions and publications in connection with the European Heritage Days, development of educational projects related to local heritage.
Axis 2: Strengthen the cross-training program for artistic speakers and teachers
Aware that the development of artistic and cultural education and in particular the implementation of artistic and cultural education pathways create specific training needs, the partners are working to strengthen and develop a cross-training offer for actors in arts and cultural education according to three points:
- strengthening the role of arts and culture in initial teacher education;
- the thematic training offered, in particular as part of the implementation of the artistic and cultural education pathway;
- training in setting up artistic and cultural education projects.
Axis 3: Decomplete a concerted regional strategy
In order to encourage the development of artistic and cultural education in Mayotte and its long-term inclusion, the DAC and the Rectorate of Mayotte propose to contribute to the implementation of a regional strategy concerted with all the institutional actors concerned.
As part of the strengthening of the departmental scheme of the organization of artistic education, the establishment of a regional steering of the rectorate and the DAC, involving public actors of the State and local authorities, would be conducive to the development of evolving regional mapping.
2. Strengthening partnership mechanisms for project development
The partnership between the Rectorate and the DAC is embodied in a common desire to continue the rooting of artistic and cultural education through the agreements signed or in preparation with cultural structures intervening on the territory of Mahorais, whether or not they are located mainly in Mayotte, and in particular with the institutions and associations mentioned in the preamble.
It affirms a common desire to encourage, support or financially support projects federating associations and cultural structures promoting the meeting of works and artists by students.
These ambitions are reflected in the implementation of actions such as:
- Arts and Cultural Education (PEAC) projects in first and second degree institutions, subject to an annual call for projects, joint instruction and funding;
- school-based artist residencies that are subject to a call for projects allowing cultural structures to intervene at the departmental level;
- the annual Baobab Festival;
- the partnership development of a scheme of artistic teaching in school time including:
- music practice classes at M'Gombani College;
- “Theatre” options (specialty teaching and optional option) in the high schools of Mamoudzou-Nord and Sada;
