Museums
The term Museum covers an extremely varied reality and does not represent a label. Under the museum label, heterogeneous projects coexist. The museum service of the DAC Martinique is responsible for implementing the policy of the Ministry of Culture and Communication at the regional level and more precisely accompanies museums that benefit from the designation Musées de France.
The name Musée de France was introduced by the law of 4 January 2002 on the museums of France. The name Musée de France may be assigned at the request of the legal person or persons who own the collections, by decision of the Minister responsible for culture, after the High Council of Museums of France.
Museums in France are under the responsibility of qualified scientific staff and are subject to scientific and technical control by the State. They must have a public service and certain obligations: to have a inventory preferably digitized, a ten-year plan of completion. They are invited to make regular payments in the joconde base.
1 218 museums are known as the Musée de France. They form a dense network throughout the country, in France and overseas. Museums in France can depend on local authorities: municipalities, communities of commune, departments, regions. They may also depend on the state, as well as associations or foundations.
Among the 1 218 museums in France,
- 82% are the responsibility of the local authorities or their grouping,
- 13% “private legal persons (associations or foundations)”
- 5% state.
- 61 museums only belong to the state.
- 38national museums report directly to the Ministry of Culture and Communication.
There are seven Museums of France in Martinique:
Museums designated before 2002 as museums controlled, became Museums of France in 2002, are community museums :
The Departmental Museum of Archaeology
Les regional museums: Maison de la Canne, Pilot River Ecomuseum, Regional Museum of History and Ethnography.
The Galleries of Geology and Botany, prefiguration of the museum of natural history of the City of Fort-de-France
The Franck Perret Vulcanological Museum of the City of Saint-Pierre
Few in number and of modest size, they were recently created. Their mission is to present the history and society of Martinique.
There are, however, many community museums, an expression of true and selfless passion and commitment.
The support of the DAC goes in priority to the museums of France for the valorization of the collections, their digitization, the exhibitions, the publishing of catalogues, the colloquia, the training of the staff, the services of the public.
