Freelance journalists have been hard hit by the Covid-19 crisis and have experienced significant revenue declines.

In order to support this weakened profession, the Government has decided to create, in conjunction with the organizations of journalists consulted, financial assistance for freelance journalists who have suffered a decrease in activity due to the covid-19 crisis.19, with €29.5 million over two years.

The decree instituting this exceptional social assistance was published in Official journal French Republic on 12 September 2021. It lays down the conditions of eligibility for aid and specifies its calculation methods. In accordance with the procedures laid down in the French Public Procurement Code, a service provider in charge of the implementation of this system was chosen after a conventional, open and transparent selection procedure.

The platform for eligible freelance journalists to submit their applications for assistance will be launched on September 30, 2021.

Applicants will be able to file their application until October 31, 2021 for assistance in respect of losses of income incurred in 2020. After that date, they will be informed of the amount of assistance that will be allocated to them and paid in 2021.
