Philippe Chatel, author, composer and performer, is part of the first wave of the new French song. He had his first hits in 1977 with «J'taime bien Lili» and «Ma Lycéenne», excerpts from his first album «Analyse».

In 1979, he wrote and composed the essential musical Emilie Jolie, dedicated to his daughter. The album’s titles are performed by great French artists such as his friend Georges Brassens, Julien Clerc, Françoise Hardy, Alain Souchon, Laurent Voulzy, Eddy Mitchell, and Louis Chedid. The album and musical met with a worldwide success. The characters ofEmilie JolieThe company of blue rabbits, the robot A 440, the sad hedgehog, the big bird, the ostrich, the raccoon or the wolf, populate the collective childhood imagination of several generations, thanks in particular to the illustrations of the album made by Henri Galeron. 

Emilie Jolie met with such success that the director Jean-Christophe Averty will offer a televised version for Christmas in 1980 and a live version at the Mogador theatre in 1985. The musical was finally revisited in 1997 with Florent Pagny, Jacques Dutronc, Zazie, Etienne Daho, Maurane, Danielle Darrieux and Johnny Hallyday.

Victim of a serious road accident, he wrote in 1996 a touching album called Rebirth around hope and friendship, on which he accompanies only on the guitar and piano.
