His fantasy, his humour, his poetry, his tenderness, his taste for improvisation leave French cinema orphan.

With an insolent talent, Agnès Varda expressed herself with equal joy in the feature or short film, in documentary or fiction, but also, as we know less, in contemporary art, with astonishing poetic installations, or in photography, through his collaboration with artist JR.

The filmmaker of «Cléo from 5 to 7», «Bonheur», «Sans toit ni loi», «Glaneuses», knew how to film, with equal force and empathy, happiness and unhappiness, to share her joy of living as she knew how to share the suffering of her neighbors.

This remarkable filmmaker was above all a woman capital.

With the ease of gifted people, Agnès Varda knew how to grasp the slightest circumstance, the slightest opportunity life gives to make a film.

She had begun her long career under the most favorable auspices as a photographer of the Avignon Festival, which Jean Vilar had just founded. His goal immortalized Gérard Philipe and Maria Casarès. A few years later, she shot her first feature film with two TNP beginners: Philippe Noiret and Silvia Monfort. His editor was Alain Resnais. It was in 1954. This first film, «La pointe Courte», was already the Nouvelle Vague before its time.

His determination and talent are to be commended as well as the sensitivity shown by Agnès Varda in her work.

Plethora are the themes that aroused his lively gaze and called for his artistic intervention: these themes spoke to our lives, they spoke of our lives, of the absurd and of forgetfulness. These themes have sometimes embarrassed us, they have often encumbered us, but they will always have touched us.

I extend my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.
