While the mandate of Muriel Mayette-Holtz at the head of the Académie de France in Rome - Villa Médicis ends on September 16, Françoise Nyssen, Minister of Culture, would like to thank her for her committed action at the head of this establishment. The Minister of Culture also wishes to commend the action of all the staff of the institution, who knew how to renew their organization and their functioning for the realization of the artistic and cultural project carried out by the director.
Since 2015, Muriel Mayette-Holtz and his teams have sought to further open the cultural programming of the Académie de France à Rome (AFR) to the diversity of artistic expressions. As part of her project, Muriel Mayette-Holtz took special care to highlight the work of women artists.
In order to strengthen France’s ability to attract and promote the French contemporary art scene and the best artistic talents from around the world who choose it to create, the Minister of Culture has asked that a fundamental reflection be conducted by her department on the future of this institution. This reflection will be based in particular on the conclusions of the mission entrusted to Mr. Thierry Tuot, president of the board of directors of the AFR, resident on the support of the State to artist residencies.
In this context, the missions of this emblematic establishment will be redefined by drawing on the richness of its history and the close ties between France and Italy.
On the basis of the guidelines adopted, an open recruitment procedure will soon be implemented for the appointment of the director of the Académie de France in Rome - Villa Médicis.
