As part of its actions in favour of the visibility of women photographers, the Ministry of Culture renews the course in 2021 Elles x Paris Photo, in partnership with Paris Photo which will take place from November 11 to 14, 2021 at the Grand Palais éphémère. Initiated in 2018, this course aims to improve the best representation and recognition of women photographers on the French and international scene, by encouraging galleries to enhance their work with collectors and institutions. Since its creation, this path has seen the place of women artists significantly increase on the fair: from 20% in 2018, their presence is 32% in 2021.

For this new edition, Nathalie Herschdorfer, art historian specializing in the history of photography and director of the Musée des beaux-arts du Locle in Switzerland, is curating Elles x Paris Photo and presents a selection of thirty works among the gallery proposals. This choice revolves around the history of photography, from 1851 to 2021, from the English botanist and pioneer Anna Atkins to the self-taught Mame-Diara Niang, who developed a work between France and Africa. A selection found in a booklet enriched with an interview with the commissioner and key figures on the place of women in photography. On November 12, a day of conferences hosted by the invited Commissioner will complete the program.

In addition to the fair, a website dedicated to Elles x Paris Photo, launched in 2020 and enriched throughout the year, highlights the work of women photographers through written and/or filmed interviews published each month.

At the launch of Elles x Paris Photo two other projects to promote gender equality in photography:

- An exceptional acquisition of works by 14 women photographers by the Centre National des Arts Plastiques (Cnap) selected on the Paris fair Photo: Laurence Aëgerter, Juliette Agnel, Heather Agyepong, Aassmaa Akhannouch, Ariele Bonzon, Sian Davey, Elsa & Johanna, Maryam Firuzi, Flore, Mikiko Hara, Lebohang Kganye, Mame-Diarra Niang and Mouna Saboni. The CNAP will also present during the fair a dedicated cimaise, Corpus, presenting the recent acquisitions of the photographic works of seven women artists: Florence Chevallier, Hannah Darabi, Farida Hamak, Mouna Karray, Fatima Mazmouz, Edith Roux and Anaëlle Vanel.

- they are growing Initiated by the Ministry of Culture and launched on November 10, this site for women photographers will cover all fields of photography (creation, documentary, press, culinary, wildlife, fashion, advertising, etc.). It is intended to accompany women photographers in their careers by providing them with essential resources related to their rights and the support mechanisms to which they can have access. The site will also contain information to facilitate their relations with public or private employers or allow them to discuss professional issues. This is the first part of a larger project that will take place in many fields of culture and art.

Elles x Paris Photo is a project led by the Ministry of Culture, in partnership with Paris Photo and with the support of Women In Motion, a Kering program.
