The Dada spirit and the avant-garde spirit that animated Huang Yong Ping have died out.

Huang Yong Ping came to France in 1989 to take part in the exhibition Les Magiciens de la Terre at the Centre Pompidou, and decided to settle there to escape the tumult that was then shaking his country.

An artist who had chosen France, she gave it back to him by choosing him in turn to represent it at the Venice Biennale in 1999. The Ministry of Culture had entrusted him with the Nave of the Grand Palais under which he deployed the work Empires, a huge snake sliding on more than 300 metal containers during Monumenta 2016. The artist often expressed himself through giant, monumental works, such as his Serpent d'Océan, which local residents and tourists can admire in the waves of Saint-Brévin-les-Pins.

Huang Yong Ping is committed to censorship and the difficulties of expressing himself freely for Chinese artists and can be considered one of the leading figures of the Chinese avant-garde.

The Minister of Culture extends his deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Huang Yong Ping.
