This afternoon, five people ripped a Bari funerary pole of the 19the century and manipulated it. They formulated political messages and challenged the presence of this work, and others, in French collections.

Franck Riester condemns with the utmost firmness these acts that damage the heritage. If the debate on the restitution of works from the African continent is perfectly legitimate, it cannot in any case justify this type of action. A complaint has been filed by the museum and a police investigation is ongoing.

The work does not appear to have undergone any major degradation and the Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac Museum is taking immediate steps to complete any required restorations.
