Roselyne Bachelot-Narquin, Minister of Culture, is delighted that the talent and work of Jean-Claude Mourlevat have been distinguished by the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA), created in memory of Swedish novelist Astrid Lindgren, creator among others of Fifi Brinironside. Jean-Claude Mourlevat is the first Frenchman to receive this prestigious international award, which awards each year an author, an illustrator or an institution whose work makes a remarkable contribution to the spread of children’s literature and promotes reading.

The jury rewarded the abundant work of a generous author, whose many novels have been awarded literary prizes, tireless storyteller who addresses sometimes difficult subjects, reinventing the codes of tales. The words of Jean-Claude Mourlevat are addressed to all and accompany our children to grow with sweetness. Several of his works, translated into some twenty languages, have been very successful: Earthling (Gallimard Jeunesse, 2011), The winter fight (Gallimard Jeunesse, 2006), Sophie Scholl: «no to cowardice» (Actes Sud Junior, 2013).

The Minister of Culture congratulates him on this international recognition, which reflects the excellence of French authors, especially children’s literature, and their aura in the world.
