Franck Riester, Minister of Culture, in full agreement with Philippe Henry, Mayor of Château-Gontier, President of the community of communes of Château-Gontier, Olivier Richefou, President of the Departmental Council of Mayenne, Christelle Morançais, President of the Regional Council of the Pays de la Loire, and Jean-Michel Noyet, President of the Carré, approves the appointment of Maël Grenier as Director of the Carré, Scène nationale et Centre d'art contemporain d'intérêt national de Château-Gontier, on the unanimous proposal of the jury meeting on 29 May 2020.

With the project of Maël Grenier, the programming of the Carré, multidisciplinary and promoting the crosses between live performance and plastic arts, will follow the rhythm of the seasons by establishing two highlights, one that brings together artistic proposals for families and young people, the other that brings together several issues: artistic, ecological and civic. They will be added to the current events that are Gontierama and the Biennale Onze. It will happen regularly to take side roads and create surprise in unusual places, going beyond the limits of the city to extend to the communes of the Pays de Château-Gontier initially and then to the Bassin du Haut Anjou.

A continuous presence of artists, associates or accomplices, confirmed or in the future, who will find in the Carré spaces and means to carry out their creative work and times of encounter with the populations, will install an artistic effervescence in the heart of the city.

The ambition of the project is to make the Carré a place of artistic creation and citizen invention and the heritage ensemble that is the Ursuline Convent an open space for all, inviting to discovery and artistic practice, increasing opportunities to participate in its activities, and irrigating the territory by establishing partnerships with other artistic and cultural structures at the departmental and regional levels.

Since 2016, Maël Grenier has been Deputy Director of the Nevers Agglomeration House of Culture. Previously, he was director of the association Fête de Crozon, production administrator in several structures and then deputy director of the Centre dramatique national de l'Océan Indien in La Réunion.

He will succeed Babette Masson who has asserted his rights to retirement and whose career the Minister wishes to salute and wish the greatest success in the continuation of his artistic work.
