Unique event in the world that offers both amateurs and professionals a rich panorama on the history of art and the heritage from prehistory to contemporary creation, the Festival of the History of Art will be held from 1er June 3, 2018. The theme will be Dream and Greece is the guest country. Françoise Nyssen, Minister of Culture will inaugurate this 8e edition in the presence of Lydia Koniordou, his Greek counterpart.

A crossroads of audiences and knowledge, it brings together art historians, artists, architects, filmmakers, writers, actors and musicians from all generations in the castle and town of Fontainebleau. The Festival de l'histoire de l'art is a time of discovery, sharing and unprecedented confrontations.Every year, it attracts a growing and diverse audience.

The dream

An evocative subject for all, the dream in the visual arts invites us to explore often unexpected subjects. The Art History Festival will explore the polymorphous nature of dreams and its infinite reminiscences in the arts. The figures of the dream, the experiences of the dream, the dream as artistic inspiration and creative process, the image setting of the dream story or the reception and interpretation of the images of the dream will all be privileged axes of reflection. The greatest artists have invested the dream: from Jérôme Bosch to Leonardo da Vinci, from Albrecht Dürer to Georges de La Tour, from Caspar David Friedrich to Johann Heinrich Füssli, from Odilon Redon to Max Ernst, from Marcel Duchamp to Annette Messager, from Victor Hugo to Gao Xing Jian, from Georges Méliès to Michel Gondry. The art historians present during its three days will be the interpreters.

Greece; guest of honor country

La 8e The Festival is dedicated to Greece. As the cradle of Western civilization, Greece has never ceased to inspire artists since ancient times as it occupies a growing place on the international contemporary scene.

The challenge is twofold: to propose for the first time a vast panorama of the current affairs of archaeology and ancient art, and to testify to the vitality of the contemporary Greek artistic scene. It is an opportunity to invite all the actors of the art world - young artists, curators, gallery owners, directors of museums, art centres and private foundations, as well as the protagonists and witnesses of Documenta 14 - to reflect the diversity of current initiatives and directions.

The News Forum

This year, the Forum de l'actualité takes place in the perspective of the reflections proposed by the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, initiated by the European Union. Around twenty round tables and conferences will present the latest developments in exhibitions, museums, heritage, research and education, such as publishing and the art market. The objective is to offer a space for original debate on the major issues of heritage, such as the traffic of ancient art objects or the delicate subject of restitution.

Other highlights of the Festival:

-                Art & Camera, the cinema section, with nearly 70 films and documentaries on art, will also revisit Greece and the dream. The greatest Greek directors will be honoured: Theo Angelopoulos, Costa-Gavras, Filippos Koutsaftis and Eva Stefani.

-                The Salon du livre et de la revue d'art, will once again host nearly 100 publishers and booksellers to present a complete panorama of French and foreign art publishing.

-                The Spring University, organized in partnership with the Ministry of National Education as part of the teaching of the history of the arts in the school, is dedicated this year to «the school of dreams».
