The 6e National Architecture Days, initiated by the Ministry of Culture in 2016, will be held on October 15, 16 and 17, 2021. These days have the objective of raising public awareness of the challenges of this major cultural area that shapes our territories.

Architecture for a better «Living together»

The 2021 edition questions the crucial theme of “living together”.

This question finds a particular echo in the current context: the crisis has induced new habits and new concerns and led to the question of the quality of our living spaces. Rethinking housing with the expansion of telework, re-evaluating the importance of external and common areas (gardens, shops), which are places of precious exchange: so many subjects whose the eighteen months that have just passed invite to take again. It is a question of finding the right balance between respect for intimacy and contact with others, addressing the challenges of ecological transition, health and the economy. More than ever, it is necessary to promote rehabilitation, reuse, bio-sourced materials and short cycles; to design adapted and flexible places, which can be modified at lower cost according to the evolution of the needs and the ages of life; also offer common places of use in addition to private spaces.

Abundant programming

For three days, architecture is discovered in all its dimensions through urban walks, debates, film screenings, exhibitions, site visits, open doors, workshops for young audiences… Once again this year, the To Live offer the public tours of exceptional contemporary homes. Another highlight, the Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine inaugurates on October 14, 2021, the day before the launch of the National Architecture Days, the exhibition of the winners of the Albums des Jeunes Architectes et Paysagistes.

In parallel, the multidisciplinary group AREP, partner of the event and specialist in mobility spaces, offers the opportunity to visit emblematic projects of the control of the ecological impact: the garden station of Nîmes, sustainable and favouring the reuse, the intermodal station of Juvisy, in the Paris region or the multimodal exchange hub of Auray and that of Lyon-Perrache whose access, routes and reception have been redesigned.

Look up, look up!

Fruit of the synergy between the Ministries of Culture and National Education, Youth and Sports, the third instalment of the "Raise your eyes!" addresses the young audience to make them discover their living environment in a new light. Schoolchildren will have to ask themselves about “living together” as they discover architecture. Organized on Friday, October 15, this day will be an opportunity for school children, from kindergarten to grade 12, to go out of classes to learn to decipher the landscapes of the city and the countryside. In the Hauts-de-France region, for example, a discovery circuit in the centre of Beauvais will present the evolution of housing modes, while thousands of kilometres away, in Cayenne, Guyana, will be given to understand traditional Creole architecture in a specific urban context.

The networking architecture

The National Architecture Days, coordinated throughout the territory by the regional cultural affairs directorates, will also be an opportunity to discover the networks, public and private, that allow architecture to radiate: the Cities and Countries of Art and History, the National Higher Schools of Architecture, the Councils of Architecture, Urbanism and the Environment (CAUE), the houses of architecture, the architects councils of the State. «Living together» architecture is also shared with the National Council of the Order of Architects (CNOA) which will be mobilized again this year, with the Regional Councils and architects, to enable everyone to discover this profession and the built environment differently. The architects will meet the public and partners of the act of building to show their know-how and experience. Collectively or individually, they will organize meetings in the public space, visits to projects, construction sites and agencies, urban walks, educational workshops, online events…

Launch of National Architecture Days Instagram Contest

A competition is offered to subscribers of the official Instagram account of the event @journeesarchitecture. Participants are invited to guess the name of an architect and the location of a building posted in an Instagram story. Every Thursday and during the 4 weeks following the event, a winner is drawn. The lots awarded are related to architecture: a pass for the Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine; the book «Architecture – Description et vocabulaire methodiques» at Éditions du patrimoine, subscriptions to the magazine À vivre, tote bags from the Centre Pompidou or exceptional prints of the event poster.

A new digital TV channel dedicated to the event

This new online channel will be streamed on the website of the National Architecture Days, an application will also allow access to it on smartphones. It will be an invitation to navigate between documentaries, archives, portraits and youth programs.

Broader objectives

These National Days of Architecture are part of a month dedicated to architecture and heritage, in France and internationally, which began with the European Heritage Days, also marked by World Architecture Day on 5 October.
