For this 38th edition of the European Heritage Days, more than 8 million visitors visited the nearly 15,000 accessible monuments (more than 2,700 of which were opened for the first time or exceptionally) in compliance with the health rules in force. This success, both in terms of mobilization and in the number of activities proposed, demonstrates once again the enthusiasm intact for our heritage.

As is the case every year, exceptional sites and buildings usually closed to the public, including the main departments and buildings of institutions (Hôtel d'Évreux - Palais de l'Élysée, Hôtel de Matignon, Hôtel de Bourvallais - Ministry of Justice, National Assembly, etc.), many embassies and prefectures have opened their doors to the greatest number, revealing the time of a weekendend their splendour and their share of the unknown. This year, visitors were able to dive in the heart of the work of securing and consolidating the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, or discover, in an exceptional way, the belfry of Béthune in the Pas-de Calais, after its restoration financed by the Ministry of Culture, local authorities and the Heritage Mission entrusted to Stéphane Bern, the former national cartoucherie of Bourg-lès-Valence in the Drôme, listed as historical monuments, or the Vernes en Isère hydroelectric power station, commissioned in September 1918 as a villa.

The Palais-Royal, the seat of the Ministry of Culture, the Council of State and the Constitutional Council, welcomed 26,814 visitors who took part in many activities within the domain: a tour led by guides-speakers, two new digital track games, an exhibition of vintage vehicles and fencing demonstrations.

The Ministry of Culture also renewed the “Look up!” in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. Many students, from kindergarten to grade 12, spent a day outside their classroom on Friday, September 17 to discover the heritage of their region under the guidance of their teachers. Another operation for school children, the children of Heritage, initiated by the federation of CAUE (council of architecture, urban planning and environment).

This 38e edition also celebrated the railway heritage promoting multiple exceptional openings and animations around the rail.

Roselyne Bachelot-Narquin, Minister of Culture, sends her warmest thanks to all those who make it possible each year to hold this great heritage festival.

In 2022, the 39e European Heritage Days will be held on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 September.

Under the patronage of the Council of Europe and the European Commission, the European Heritage Days benefit from many partners: Lidl, French Federation of Vintage Vehicles (FFVE), Renault Foundation, Federation of Beauty Companies (FEBEA), Historic Residence, Old French Houses, Heritage Foundation, Centre des monuments nationaux, Fédération nationale des CAUE, Ville de Paris, Agence nationale pour le développement du cinéma en régions, SNCF, RATP, Phenix, Insert, Affluences, Sisley, Explorama, France TV, Radio France, France Médias Monde, 20 Minutes, ARTE, Gulli, and Toute l'histoire.

The Heritage Mission, entrusted to Stéphane Bern and the Française des Jeux were also involved in the event.

The Ministry of Culture thanks FEBEA (Fédération des entreprises de la beauté) and its members for their generosity and responsiveness: Eugène Perma, L'Oréal France, LVMH, Groupe Pierre Fabre, Groupe Rocher and Sisley.
