2019 edition of the Key figures on culture and communication was released Thursday 13 June in bookshop and digital format. Published annually, this yearbook offers, from 36 synthetic sheets structured in seven major chapters, a photograph of all the sectors that make up the cultural field.

Exceptional use of museums and heritage sites, dynamic live performances, increased spending by French people on cultural outings (+6%), a dramatic increase in online cultural consumption, and an ever-increasing cultural offering. The 2019 edition of Key Figures on Culture and Communication confirms an appetite for an open, liberal and eclectic culture that is transforming under the influence of digital technologies and uses.

Despite these dynamic practices, the direct economic weight of culture has not increased since 2013 and has stabilized around 2.3% of the economy as a whole. In the current digital upheaval, many cultural sectors are still looking for an economic model that ensures fair remuneration for all actors (authors, publishers, distributors, physical and digital broadcasters). And if, for example, recorded music derives, for the first time in 2018, mainly its revenues from online music, this sector is far from having recovered the economic conditions it knew before the digital shift, despite steadily increasing musical consumption.

The challenge for public policy is to keep pace with current developments and ensure that the economic value created by this cultural appetite benefits all actors in these sectors. With this in mind, the 2019 edition of the Key Figures on Culture and Communication offers an objective approach to the entire cultural field and is an essential tool for thinking about the issues that cross it.
