Fleur Pellerin, Minister of Culture and Communication, and Jean-Marc Pujol, Mayor of Perpignan, in full agreement with the Languedoc-Roussillon region, gave their approval to the unanimous proposal of the jury to appoint Borja Sitjà as director of the Théâtre de l'Archipel, National stage of Perpignan. He will take up his duties on 1 June 2016.
Borja Sitjà currently directs the Romea Theatre in Barcelona, having successively been director of the Barcelona-GREC International Festival, director of the Universal Forum of Cultures Arts Festival, artistic director of the Ramon Llull Institute, and General Manager of the Barcelona Internacional Teatre.
Making creation the spearhead of its action with the dual aim of reaching a wide audience and making Perpignan shine, Borja Sitjà wants to make the Archipelago Theatre a home open to artists, by welcoming the most renowned on the international stage in the fields of theatre, music and dance, as well as the closest settled in the region. It aims to transform the theatre into an open and familiar place in which the public can meet, exchange, meet artists and become actors of certain projects.
The project of Borja Sitjà is also to consolidate the square of Perpignan, alongside Barcelona and Girona, in an active axis of rapprochement between Northern Catalonia and Southern Catalonia, facilitating the circulation of artists and works, organizing the presence of Catalan culture in all its diversity and forming the basis of a European project that could extend to Madrid and Valencia.
The ambitious proposals of Borja Sitjà meet the objective of influence that all the partners call for their wishes for this National Scene which has recently joined the network.
