With Guy-Claude François disappears a great name of the theatre. A scenographer, or rather a true creator of imaginary places, he accompanied the Théâtre du Soleil for more than forty years, providing Ariane Mnouchkine with a setting to express her artistic projects.
Guy-Claude François has strongly contributed to strengthening the role and place of the stage designer in theatre, but also in cinema, notably through his collaboration with Bertrand Tavernier. He imposed his signature by presenting to the spectator a bare and poetic scene, which he recreated with envy according to the places of touring and the desires of Ariane – by transforming, for example, the Cartoucherie into a cinema stage to host the film Molière.
He thus participated in the adventure of The Golden Age, Mephisto, The Shakespeares, Sihanouk, Indiade, The Atrides, The City of Perjury, Tartuffe, And suddenly, nights of awakening, Drums on the dike, etc.
His disappearance interrupts an extremely rich artistic journey filled with precious collaborations, so it is with great sadness that I associate myself with the pain of his family and loved ones.
