Dance films are films whose main subject is dance. They can be fictions, documentaries, video-dance, creative films, web-series ... based on or around a dancer, a dancer, a choreographer, a dance, a work. The Ministry of Culture, through the support mechanism for the production of dance films, allocates a grant to the promoters of such projects.
Presentation of the device
What is support for the production of dance films?
Noting a "blind spot" in the support schemes for dance films, the Ministry of Culture (Directorate-General for Artistic Creation - DGCA) wanted to boost the policies in favour of these films. A support mechanism for the production of dance films was thus implemented in an experimental spirit.
This support for production concerns professional projects constituting works in their own right and taking various forms:
- in their nature: fiction, documentaries, creative films, video-dance, web-series, etc.
- in their duration: short, medium or feature film
- in their diffusion: film festivals, structures and choreographic festivals, structures and festivals visual arts, cinema, TV channels, online, etc.
The field of "production" is broadly understood and thus refers to writing, pre-production, filming and post-production. Special attention is also paid to the dissemination of the work and in particular to its relevance and visibility.
Objectives of the approach
Implemented in an experimental manner, support for the production of dance films has several objectives, including:
- listen to emerging projects and the needs of professionals
- promote exchanges between the choreographic field and the field of cinema and audiovisual
Am I concerned by this approach?
- Associations
- Private companies
This system is aimed at professional only.
The project leader must meet the following criteria:
- be a legal person (association, company, etc.): film production company, audiovisual production company, dance company, live performance production office, ...
- not having received support from a decentralized department of the Ministry of Culture for the same project
- present a film for public broadcast
- have sources of funding other than the Ministry of Culture grant
The carrier structure may be based abroad. In this case:
- his file must be written in French
- the film must include, if necessary, French subtitling
- the film must have at least one broadcast in France
The following are not eligible:
- natural persons
- recordings of shows or films forming an integral part of a scenic device, thus not constituting a work in its own right
- films whose distribution depends entirely on a room or an installation
- only film broadcasts: the project must concern the production of a film (writing, pre-production, shooting and post-production)
The scope of eligible expenses covers the entire field of the “production” of the film in its broadest sense: writing, pre-production, shooting, post-production (artistic, technical, logistical, administrative expenses, etc.).
Expenses must be:
- directly related to project implementation
- necessary to carry out the project
- reasonable under the principle of sound management
- generated during project delivery
- identifiable and controllable

Entropico is a series of 5 short films of 17 minutes each directed by the choreographer Christophe Haleb (La Zouze CIE).
These films, like so many urban crossings, take us from island to island, from port city to archipelago, and make us listen to the youth of Havana, Marseille and Fort-de-France.
The 5 episodes are now available on La Zouze TV: https://lazouzetv.com/series/
They are fifteen young dancers from diverse backgrounds. They are on a dance tour Crowd, a play by Gisèle Vienne inspired by the raves of the 90s, on emotion and the perception of time.
Following them from theatre to theatre, If it was love, documents their work and their strange and intimate relationships. Because borders are blurred. The scene seems to contaminate life – unless it’s the other way around.
From a documentary on dance, the film directed by Patric Chiha (Aurora Film) makes a disturbing journey through our nights, our holidays, our loves. This film won the Teddy Award for best documentary at the 2020 Berlin International Film Festival.
