Within the national and territorial institutions of higher education for performing arts (music, theatre, circus, puppetry, dance) accredited by the Ministry of Culture, research activities are increasingly being carried out in recent years. This new dynamic, which accompanies the evolution of pedagogical models, is supported by the Ministry of Culture which allocates a grant to accredited institutions carrying out such projects.
Presentation of the device
What is the REVES call for projects?
The Ministry of Culture is renewing its call for projects to support research in higher education institutions of live performance. Now entitled REVES (Research and Development in Higher Schools of Live Performance), this scheme is open to all national and territorial higher education institutions in the fields of music, theatre, circus, Puppetry, dance, accredited by the Ministry of Culture.
The integration of higher education institutions under the Ministry of Culture into the LMD (Licence, Master, Doctorate) scheme in the early 2010’s has enabled the development of new forms of research. To strengthen this dynamic by mobilizing all the institutions of these networks, the Direction générale de la création artistique has therefore decided to renew this call for projects.
Objectives
The call for projects Research and Exploitation in Higher Schools of Performing Arts (REVES) has several objectives:
- to encourage the development of research in higher education institutions for the performing arts;
- to make artists in training aware of the spirit, method and recent achievements of research in their field;
- promote the development of research programmes focused on artistic practice;
- to federate the educational community of schools around a research project.
In 2021, 11 projects were submitted by 8 higher education institutions for performing arts. Six research projects were selected, including three in the field of music, two in the field of dance and one in the field of theatre.
Am I concerned by this approach?
- Public institutions/ State services
Projects must be submitted and supported by the following institutions: national and territorial higher education schools issuing national diplomas in music, dance, drama, circus and puppetry arts and regularly funded by the Ministry of Culture.
The artistic(s) and scientific(s) responsible for the projects must be teachers and/or members of the teaching team of the institutions mentioned supra. Students may be co-responsible.
The research project will need to register in one of the following three axes :
- research on pedagogical practices and mediation
- theoretical and practical research on the processes of creation and interpretation
- research on musical, theatrical, circassian, marionette and choreographic heritage and culture
The research project will also:
- be part of the school’s educational project
- present a precise description of the project, the research object, its phasing, its steering, the protocols and methodologies involved, the people involved, the partner entities
- provide for the development of communicable elements for the retrieval of research (publications and miscellaneous communications, DVDs, computer software, notebooks, website, print or audiovisual edition, etc.) for the artistic and educational community
- provide at least one partnership outside the institution (research centre, cultural institutions, places of creation and/or dissemination, other institutions, etc.)
- provide for financing other (including own resources) than those resulting from the aid scheme
Specific Rules:
- Several research projects may be submitted by the same institution provided that the teaching teams supporting them are different.
- For projects already supported and finalized, an extension may be presented if it proposes a significantly new or different orientation or methodology.
Projects are not eligible:
- developed by students as part of their curriculum (in particular, the preparation of thesis, thesis or final project)
- that involve a direct process of creating or producing a show
- already supported and still being implemented
Proceeding
The amount of the grant requested must be between €5,000 and €10,000. It must represent a maximum of 80% of the project financing plan.
The amount of aid granted to the winning projects will be determined according to each project within the limits set above.
Successful projects will have to submit a grant application which will give rise to a notification of funding.
If the project for which the grant was awarded is not carried out and/or if the commitments are not met, the grant is reimbursed upon request by the Direction générale de la création artistique, for all or part of the amounts paid.
In their analysis of applications, the members of the committee of experts will pay particular attention to the following criteria :
- scientific and cultural interest of the research project
- clarity in the enunciation of a research approach, argued and referenced (problem and methodology, state of the art of the work conducted on the subject, resources used, phasing of the project, etc.)
- relevance of partnerships in terms of professional skills and resources for the project
- quality of the proposed research documentation and retrieval elements
- feasibility of the project: adequacy of objectives with the organization, methodology, schedule and resources dedicated to the project
- balance of budget and ability to leverage other funding
