What are the languages of France?

Alongside French, the national language, the languages of France shape our cultural identity and constitute a living and creative intangible wealth. The following are regarded as languages of France:

  • regional languages, enshrined in the Constitution since 2008:Regional languages belong to the heritage of France" (article 75-1). These are the languages historically spoken in a part of the territory of the Republic, for longer than French: Alsatian, Basque, Breton, Catalan, Corsican, Creole, West Flemish, French, French, Futunian, indigenous languages of NewCaledonia, indigenous languages of French Guiana, indigenous languages of French Polynesia, languages of oïl (bourguignon-morvandiau, champenois, franc-comtois, gallo, lorrain, normand, picard, poitevin-saintongeais, wallon), kibushi, mahorais, occitan, Croissant, speak Ligurian, Wallisian.
  • six non-territorial languages, without geographical link with the territory of the Republic but practiced by French citizens for several generations: Arabic dialectal Maghreb, Western Armenian, Berber, Judeo-Spanish, Rromani, Yiddish.
  • French sign language.

The Ministry of Culture encourages cultural creation in the languages of France, considered as vectors of artistic creation, in disciplines such as audiovisual, song, book or live performance. It also supports research projects to document and make better known the languages of France.
