The May 24 session will be devoted to the acquisitions under receivership of the national museums during the Occupation: the collections of the Palace of Versailles in the light of the sources (1940-1949).
The session will take place at 6:30 pm in the Jacqueline Lichtenstein auditorium of the Institut national d'histoire de l'art (INHA), Galerie Colbert, with Claire Bonnotte Khelil, scientific collaborator at the Musée national des châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon.
What was the policy of acquiring the Palace of Versailles during the Occupation? What were the conditions of these acquisitions with antique dealers, individuals, and during public sales or sales under receivership organized by the administration of the Domaine de Seine-et-Oise? Particular attention will be paid to sequestration, to the processes of integration of these artistic goods into museum collections and to post-war restitution, as well as, more generally, to the attitude of the national museums under the Occupation in all its complexity.
The seminar is organized by the Institut national d'histoire de l'art (INHA) and the Mission de recherche et de restitution des biens culturels spoliés entre 1933 et 1945 (M2RS), in collaboration with the Institut national du patrimoine (INP). Its field of investigation is the context, meaning and consequences of the research of provenance and the restitution of works of art. This seminar is open to all.
All seminar sessions are broadcast on the INHA YouTube channel.
