La Mission de recherche et de restitution des biens culturels spoliés entre 1933 et 1945 (M2RS) est un service du Secrétariat général du ministère de la Culture, rattaché au Service des affaires juridiques et internationales.
Elle est chargée de piloter et d’animer la politique publique de recherche, de réparation et de mémoire des spoliations de biens culturels. Elle contribue à identifier et mieux connaître les œuvres à la provenance douteuse conservées par les institutions publiques.
La Mission de recherche et de restitution des biens culturels spoliés entre 1933 et 1945 a deux objectifs principaux :
- définir, coordonner et mettre en œuvre la politique de recherche et de restitution, et contribuer à la sensibilisation du public et des professionnels ;
- étudier, en lien avec les institutions culturelles concernées, les cas individuels de spoliations de biens culturels, à l’initiative des familles, des institutions culturelles ou sur sa propre initiative, en vue de parvenir à une mesure de réparation (restitution ou indemnisation).
