Françoise Nyssen, Minister of Culture, has decided to entrust to Benjamin Stora, President of the Orientation Council of the Museum of the History of Immigration, a mission of coordination and accompaniment of cultural action in favor of migrants, establishment in the national institutions of the Ministry of Culture.

Within the European Union, France must now face the problems of rooting and respect for the cultural identity of each individual arriving on its territory. Access to culture for people who are far from it is one of the priorities of the Ministry of Culture. The actions implemented today and the investment of cultural actors in this field, are already exceptional and must be valued, strengthened and extended.

This cultural mission in favour of migrants must therefore make it possible to continue and intensify this mobilization, while supporting new initiatives.

Françoise Nyssen, Minister of Culture, hopes that this mission will lead to operational proposals that meet three major objectives:

  • Develop migrants' access to arts and culture, notably through actions led by national operators;
  • To give the possibility, through the development of work already initiated, to artists and professionals of the migrant cultural sector to continue their activity on the French territory;
  • To contribute to the evolution of our society’s views on migrant populations, through artistic projects accessible to the greatest number.

These operational proposals will be submitted to the Minister of Culture by Benjamin Stora before the summer of 2018, for implementation in the second half of the year and a first assessment of operations completed by the end of the year.
