The President of the Republic announced on February 23, 2008, during the inauguration of the Salon
France’s application to Unesco to see its gastronomy
World Heritage Site. By supporting the initiative of the
heritage and food cultures chaired by Jean-Robert PITTE, former President of the
Sorbonne, the President of the Republic said: Agriculture and the trades that shape it
each day is the source of our country’s culinary diversity.”
All the ministerial departments concerned supported this application, of which the
the Ministry of Culture and Communication.
This inscription to the intangible heritage of humanity implies the implementation of a number of
concrete measures to ensure the preservation of the French gastronomic meal, in particular
in the field of educational support in schools, identification of the constituent elements of this
intangible heritage and cultural events. These measures are integrated into the programme
Government’s September 2010 national food plan and will be implemented in
with all the institutional and private partners concerned.
Bruno LE MAIRE, Minister of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries, Rural Development and
and Frédéric MITTERRAND, Minister of Culture and
Communication, welcome this decision which enshrines the great wealth of the food heritage
and French cuisine. The two departments will work closely together to promote
food and culinary know-how, encouraging gastronomic tourism in our territories, and
to promote French food heritage internationally.
