Tribute by Frédéric Mitterrand, Minister of Culture and Communication, to Shirley Verrett.

With Shirley Verrett, the opera loses one of its great voices. It was
a solar artist, whose beauty and presence on stage
further enhanced the performances of the voice. Unforgettable Lady
Macbeth, the one the Italians called «the Negra Callas» -
the Black Callas- was cut from the fabric of the Night Queens, the
Orpheus in hell and Aida.
Nourished by French culture, she cultivated this bond of affection until
in her distant Michigan. She possessed to a high degree this
the extra soul that the charism gives, without which the most
great divas cannot touch hearts and become
truly immortal.
