Tribute by Frédéric Mitterrand, Minister of Culture and Communication, to Gustav Leonhardt
Gustav Leonhardt passed away in his home in Amsterdam at 83.
Its disappearance mourns the world of baroque music, this island
enchanted whose beauty he made resonate on instruments
alumni.
Under his harpsichordist and organist fingers as under his baton
as conductor, baroque music had experienced a revival
of which he was the undisputed pioneer. Bewitching musician, musicologist,
man of an immense culture, he will have given birth to generations of
and restored all its prestige to baroque music.
He joined his absolute master, Bach, of which he recorded nearly 200
sacred cantatas with Nikolaus Harnoncourt. A Bach he had
in 1971 in the Anna Magdalena Chronicle
Bach» by Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet.
I pay tribute to the courage of this majestic artist who, on the 12th
December, and in spite of his illness, occurred in Paris, at
The Northern Food Theatre.
