Tribute by Frédéric Mitterrand, Minister of Culture and Communication, to Cy Twombly

A great American painter who deeply loved old Europe
Cy Twombly has been living in Italy for over 50 years.
His work was deeply marked by his passion for antiquity
Greek and Roman mythology, which was a source
inexhaustible.

Just a few months ago, I had the joy of inaugurating the
the painted ceiling he had made for the Bronze Room of the
museum of the Louvre. A magnificent work that Cy Twombly
offer to mark his great friendship for France.

Both in his painting, his drawings and his sculpture, Cy Twombly
has consistently kept away from major objections that will have
agitated the artistic scene of the twentieth century. It was of no chapel.
Modern, but foreign to any discourse of breaking with tradition. Neither
figurative, not abstract. Only awesome.
