It is with sincere sadness that I learn of the death of Pina Bausch.
Pina Bausch disappears and it is contemporary dance as a whole that sees itself orphaned by one of its greatest masters. A genius creator, she has inspired the choreographic art of the second half of the 20th century with her discoveries and her world-wide style.
Founder of the Tanztheater - dance-theatre, Pina Bausch gave dance a new "writing of bodies", opening it up to singing, to play, to speech, upsetting the relationship with the spectator.
If the city of Wuppertal in Germany can be proud to have had as ambassador one of the most inventive choreographers of its time, Paris was also, by the regular presence of Pina Bausch at the Théâtre de la Ville, its «residence of heart» where in January 2009 she performed her last show Sweet Mambo. Over the course of her creations, she offered the French public her most beautiful moments of dance, notably through the transmission, in 1997, to the repertoire of the National Ballet of the Paris Opera of The coronation of spring, created in 1975.
Many renowned artists can claim his influence, including the French dancer Dominique Mercy, a lifelong friend, the most loyal collaborator.
With the passing of one of its most brilliant representatives, the world of dance is now in mourning.
