Frédéric Mitterrand, Minister of Culture and Communication, after knowing of the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding concluded between Google and Hachette Livre opening negotiations for the digitisation of unavailable French works of the Chette group.

The Minister recalls that the issues of digitization and rights
works not available are the subject of a common work between
all publishers, authors and the Ministry of Culture and
Communication as part of the Future Investments, in order to
to preserve at best the rights of creation, the economic interests
of the industry, including booksellers, and public expectations.
Frédéric Mitterrand recalls the need for the Google-
Hachette which has been signed, respects the principles defined in the framework
of this consultation.
The Minister has indicated in recent days to Google the importance that he
attached to this subject, and the priority it gave, before any collaboration
Google with major national institutions like the
National Library of France, to respect the rights of
authors and publishers be assured. In this regard, he will be attentive to
results of proceedings in the United States.
Frédéric Mitterrand intends to consult quickly the main
stakeholders to ensure that the publishing industry as a whole
identifies a common strategy.
