The abbey was founded at the end of the 8th century by Roger, Count of Limoges, under the protection of Charlemagne. A relic of the Holy Cross attracts pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. Rich in numerous donations, some of his possessions are very remote, which gives him power and fame as far as Flanders.
