In June 2016, the Minister of Culture and Communication decided to close this site and redeploy the missions of the National Archives to two sites: one heritage site, at the Rohan-Soubise Quadrilateral in Paris; the other contemporary and part of Greater Paris, in Pierrefitte-sur-Seine.
The second wave of the transfer of archival holdings to the Pierrefitte-sur-Seine site, in stores in progress, began in the second half of 2019 and is expected to end in 2021. These transfers require major preliminary work. During this period, the funds, now kept on the site of Fontainebleau, are no longer accessible. The funds transferred will be open for consultation from 2020 to 2021, depending on the relocation schedule in Pierrefitte.
