The term “observance” has been used since the sixteenth century to qualify the manner in which one complies with a religious rule. It is now found in various areas such as taxes where “tax compliance” is compliance with the tax rule (Official Journal of 21 September 2017). When we talk about “adherence” in the medical field, we are talking about the “observance” of a treatment, in English patient compliance or patient adherence, in other words, the regularity and the precision with which the patient complies with the prescriptions of his doctor.
