The Bergerie nationale – CEZ de Rambouillet, for the year 2023, is proposing for the first time to the artist or artistic team who wishes to apply, to make a proposal that includes one of the two dimensions or both: creation and co-creation. These residences receive financial support from the Direction régionale des affaires culturelles (DRAC) of Île de France and the Direction régionale, interdépartementale de l'Alimentation, de l'Agriculture et de la Forêt (DRIAAF) of Île de France.

La Bergerie nationale is located in the town of Rambouillet, Ville d'Art et d'Histoire and Ville porte du Parc Naturel Régional de la Haute Vallée de Chevreuse. It is at the heart of the National Domain of Rambouillet which is one of the last examples of the great royal domains of the eighteenth century.

Today, the Bergerie Nationale serves five major transversal missions:

  1. Initial and continuing training (400 learners) in agriculture, animal husbandry and animal care
  2. Support for agricultural education and the profession
  3. Public Education and Territory Animation by welcoming over 100,000 visitors each year
  4. Production activities, today in organic farming and upgraded in short circuits
  5. Preservation of natural heritage, living heritage and built heritage.

"Transition and transmission to the Bergerie nationale"

Since its creation in 1786, the Bergerie Nationale is a place dedicated to experimentation and innovation in agriculture. Even today, at a time when agriculture has to respond to many food, societal, environmental and farm installation and transmission challenges, the Bergerie is positioned as a showcase of public policies in the field of agriculture and sustainable food, teaching support for the general public, professionals and the territory. Agricultural farm, educational farm, apprenticeship training centre and training centre for trainers, the Bergerie nationale is a multiple and complex place where professionals and future professionals from the agricultural world meet, apprentices, visitors, the trainers, ... It is for this reason that the research and work theme proposed in 2023 to artists or artistic teams as part of the residencies, is the following: "La Bergerie nationale: lieu de transition et de transmission".

The challenge for the Bergerie nationale, by presenting this issue to the artist, is to :

  • to reflect on the subject
  • find ways and tools to rethink the relationship between these two ambitions
  • highlight the specificity of the Bergerie Nationale in terms of transition and transmission
  • reflect with all project stakeholders (learners, trainers, farmers, etc.) on the positioning of the structure as a model of agriculture and sustainable learning.

Objectives of the mission residence

  • To encourage and accompany the individual and collective artistic practice and expression of the users of the national Bergerie, in particular that of apprentices;
  • Help reduce inequalities in access to art and culture;
  • Develop critical thinking, understanding of social issues, sharing knowledge and the transversality of artistic fields;
  • To open up to another vision of the world and to develop the critical mind; To allow the greatest number to understand the process of creation whether it is related to contemporary creation, heritage or scientific culture, or school programs;
  • To propose a federative arts and cultural education concerning both children and young people, as well as their families;
  • Contribute to the artistic and cultural development of the territory (heritage, public reading, museums, cinema, theatre, dance, music and choral practice...).
